Recipe Box DIY

I feel a little silly writing about this because everytime I post a DIY, I'm never quite sure if you sweet readers out there are just commenting because you want me to feel good about myself (which would be fine) or if you really think that what I made is cool. I sound like a really insecure twelve year old. Pretend that didn't happen.

ANYWAY....

My darling recipe box reached FAR BEYOND it's capacity this week. Recipes only make it in my recipe box once I have tried them for myself. In my mind, there is no reason to have a 3x5 card taking up space if you don't intend to make the dish again and again. This little recipe box was sent to me while I was serving a mission in New York. I had met some incredible cooks while I was there and had requested copies of their recipes. I, naturally, mentioned in a letter home that I had been collecting recipes from some lovely new friends and so my amazing mother bought a really adorable and incredibly over-priced recipe box and put it in the mail the next day. I loved it and have been filling it since I received it four years ago. (Ouch. Four years...really?)
So, I needed a new box for these little cards that I treasure. If you've been very involved in our lives lately you know that we've had some BIG expenses this last week. Between tuition, wisdom teeth, and filing for a Green Card I knew that another overpriced/adorable recipe box was nowhere in my near future so I did what any normal human being would do: I started staring at an old TOMS box. Mister and I got new pairs for Easter and Mister's box was still sitting in the corner of our bedroom so I stared for a little while and then set out with some scissors and duct tape. (I know what you're thinking. DUCT TAPE? But have you seen the new printed duct tape? Damask, cheetah, zebra, houndstooth, hello kitty, you name it. Our Christmas tree box is wrapped with Damask duct tape. It's glorious.)

The box was far too long so I had to do a little cutting and reforming:
and folding:
and then I just started covering the box with Damask duct tape:
Cute, right? I'm thinking it needs a cute/colorful design on the outside. It's a work in progress.
I ran out of Damask and can't find any anywhere (someone buy me a roll if you find one) so I had to settle for a zebra inside. I ended up really liking the contrast.
Next up, these dividers will make this box look so so cute! (Of course they won't say "thank you" and "just because".)

There is just something about making something from something else that makes me happy.
Happy Taping!

  1. I feel the same way about recipes. Why keep something if you aren't going to use it over and over? Agreed. Sorry about all of your extra expenses.. .. when it rains it pours? Anyway, Great idea!
