I remembered
last night.
I did something horrible to my back.
As in,
couldn't move
couldn't pick up the baby
couldn't carry the baby
couldn't sleep
couldn't bend over to put on pants.
Yep.
Aging.
I think it's a combination of a lot of things in my life.
For example, we new moms tend to act like pack horses.
Car seat
diaper bag
shopping bags
sonic cup (is that only me?)
And heaven forbid I have to take more than one trip from the car to the house.
(Bless apartment living)
Someday I will have a garage.
My pack-horseness might be coupled with my poor anatomy.
I was given the Johnson/Boothe ankles and feet.
Flat as boards and the ankles are caving in.
Basically, I was given a 100% chance to have HORRIBLE feet.
Thanks guys.
As a teenager, I was told by a podiatrist that I'd be in a wheelchair by age 30 if I didn't stop wearing "stupid shoes".
I just wasn't cut out for the trendy little flats.
Blast.
Did I listen to that lovely podiatrist?
Not so much.
Guess who's getting close to 30?
That would be me.
I'm beginning to hear the gentle squeaking of my wheelchair...
Yesterday I wore my Sperry's all day as I traipsed all over
campus,
the store,
the house,
and the neighborhood.
Then, from the car to the house, I thought I should carry in the
carseat,
diaper bag,
sonic cup
baby backpack
Johnny Jumper
laundry detergent
and husband's dinner
at the same time.
I nearly collapsed halfway to the door.
(I'm actually not kidding. I kind of thought I was going to die)
The flat-footed pack horse had reached her limit.
This morning I was in so much pain that I begged the Mister to take a half day off of work to care for the baby while I spent the day in awkward yoga poses trying to alleviate the pain.
He is a gem and said ok and then made me promise that I will ALWAYS take more than one trip to and from the car and then I forced myself to do something horribly emotional...

I had a shoe purge.
I know that if those tempting little nuggets are in my closet, I just won't be able to resist wearing them.
My good friend was the recipient of the shoe purge.
Lucky her.
New TOMS, boots, heels.
Ugh.
And then we went to Dillards to buy some BORNS.
Read: shoes for people like me
(except "people like me" are usually recipients of the senior citizen discount)
Luckily, the Born brand has recently decided to make things that aren't completely hideous.
So, that's positive.
Nonetheless, I felt like crying in the shoe department.
That Mister is so patient and reminds me that it's more important to be able to walk than to wear sparkly heels.
I'm having my doubts.
Anyway, since I have to do it or you all will be pushing me around Disneyland in my wheelchair, I will be drooling over the following pairs of "good-for-me" shoes until I can afford them.
and maybe these
But I did manage to buy these and a pair of metallics that I can't find online anywhere.
So, anyway, when you feel a little crick in your neck
and you find yourself craving peanut brittle
and wishing for a 7:45 bed time...
You are not alone.
My back went out last May. Same thing: I couldn't stand up straight - I could hardly lie down. I've had to give up running recently. But kudos to you... I still haven't given up the sparkly heels. My back is begging me to though. Age 30 in T minus 6 months.
ReplyDeleteAnnie, the first day of school I literally threw my back out (flat for a week) just by blowing my dang nose! Remember laughing? I did too but I had those laugh/crying/oh my goodness I'm officially old tears.
ReplyDeleteso sorry you are having back problems. I TOTALLY sympathize with you, as i too struggle with back issues and have since i was about 25. I have a hand out my chiropractor gave me for back strengthening stretches and so on. I will see if i can find it and send you a copy. For the mean time, google back strengthening exercises and try some. They have SAVED me during two pregnancies. Boy do i have some oh so humbling stories about pregnancy and back pain. I too have been unable to do absolutely nothing and it is hard! Another thing that really helps me is a thing called "Super Feet". They are inserts for your shoes. Lifesavers! And val and my dad have orthodic inserts for their shoes and they can wear flats with them. ;-) So, just some ideas... good luck and take it easy!

ReplyDeleteYou are HILARIOUS! (The not so funny thing is...I can totally relate on every level). Welcome to the world (age) of sensible shoes. Something happened to me when I became a mom, which I actually know will never happen to you, because of your sassy, hip style, but for about a decade I went frumpy mom (like jjill & talbots- sorry I'm certain there are cute items at times here, but I just went mom style...not so great). But I know why I did it...sensibility. I'm running all over the place, crawling, sitting, laying on the floor 75% of the day. It made comfortable sense. My feet and back have thanked me. Yet, the thing is, here you are keeping the sassy style alive...because I looked at those new "sensible" shoes you posted and they may still be in the too cute and trendy category to be comfortable and sensible! Lots of love!
ReplyDeleteI love Born. :) What does that say about me? I'm WAY old! Definitely the matriarch of the Misiego clan out this way. (Sigh) Thankfully cute and comfortable aren't quite as hard to find as they used to be...
